REACTION TO WEAH’S INTERVIEW

Below is my personal transcription of George Manneh Weah’s interview (press Ctrl + click to activate link or copy to your browser: http://upload3.putfile.com/videos/34522131214.mp3 ) by Star Radio Lower Margibi Correspondent Archie Weaver. Lie man says, I have listened to the interview at least 100 times and I am still shocked speechless. Luckily for me, I can use the pen to transform my thoughts into words. In a previous article, I advised George to be a gentleman and concede. So much for listening to the advice of a friend. Now, I am more than confused with where he’s going because I have much love for my brother. He has brought many happy moments to me as a staunch Invincible (Invisible) Eleven fan, even prouder moments as a Liberian when I swelled my chest to tell numerous soccer enthusiasts I have met in the U.S. that he is a personal friend of mine. We hung out together, we talked politics together, and we played soccer together! But where has that George gone?
Let me make it clear that George and the CDC are entitled to due process. As the “aggrieved party” they have every right to contest the elections. I am disappointed that more information is not forthcoming from the NEC. Unfortunately, some are considering their snail pace tantamount to dragging their feet. Some have even gone so far to speculate that they may be intentionally dragging their feet until the inauguration takes place. I find these speculations post haste. According to Part III: Complaints: Types, Section 7. Contested Election, article 7.1 of the Regulations on Complaints and Appeals (July 20, 2005) “Under the Liberian Constitution, Article 83(c) and the New Elections Law, Chapter 6, the primary method for complaint and appeal for parties and candidates contesting an election is through the contested election procedure (or post-election contestation) that seeks to overturn the results of an election. The statutory timelines and procedures … must be strictly complied with.” According to Section 7.4 of the same document, (http://www.necliberia.org/content/legaldocs/guidelinesandreg/complaintsnappeals.pdf ), “As provided in Section 6.2 of the New Elections Law, for those complaints involving a contested election, the NEC shall have thirty (30) days to consider the complaint and undertake the necessary investigation before making its determination. In order to accept and consider a post-election contestation complaint, the NEC must find that the errors alleged were not harmless and that they were proved to have affected the results of the election.” Certainly, the CDC must have filed their protest within the statutory timelines, which is “within seventy-two (72) hours after the occurrence of any event complained of, and in accordance with Section 6.6 of the New Elections Law, all such exceptions must be filed not later than five days after elections day.” If the CDC has so complied, the outer limit for a decision from the NEC is December 16th. Hence, I will advise my friend to bide his time until December 16th and I will also caution my friend that if he really loves and wants a peaceful Liberia, he should desist from making incendiary (conscious, sub-conscious, or unconscious) statements until a decision has been rendered regarding the CDC’s protest. Subsequent to any dissatisfaction he may have with the NEC’s decision, he can utilize Section 11.1 which states “A complainant whose complaint is rejected in whole or part by the NEC may appeal to the Supreme Court of Liberia…” However, the complainant must notify the NEC of their intent to go to court three (3) days before submitting their petition to the court and the NEC has three days to respond to the decision to go to court and an additional three days to review its decision and “communicate in writing its further decision based on” the subsequent review.

Given all of the above, George and the CDC must exhaust the due process before bringing their case to the court of public opinion which is sometimes constituted by easily misguided persons who may interpret/misinterpret the strong words of their leader(s) to be a call to arms. I suggest that the handlers/advisers of the CDC standard bearer ensure that he goes nowhere near a microphone or press person for fear of what he may say. At the moment his statements are borderline seditious and treasonable. There should beno reason for him to escalate the rhetoric or inflame his discontented followers. Yes, it’s great for George to stand for a cause, especially one he really believes in but to be delusional to the point where he is declaring himself “President of Liberia” is simply incredible to me. Displaying “fraudulent” ballots, making declarations, and spewing accusations are just not enough to convince anyone of the massive level of conspiracy required to rig an election, especially one that was closely observed by the international community. The CDC must make a logical, legal case and pursue the due process of law instead of issuing strongly worded statements that could be destabilizing to the fragile peace we are currently holding on to and/or interpreted as inimical to peace in Liberia.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW
Star Radio Lower Margibi Correspondent Archie Weaver asked Weah if he still maintained he was cheated.

WEAH: I can tell you I am the president of this country. No matter what happened. Like I said to President Mbeki whether you take me out or not it will not change anything. What will change is, uh the peace prevail and justice be done. And give the mantle (word inaudible) to those who deserve it and those that were elected by the people. So uh if not if the world want to change that then we need to go on the table and discuss that when we discussing the country future. There’s no victor in the elections, even though I was but if they say that uh uh they are going to nominate somebody which of course is not right because we are talking about transparency, accountability and true democracy and uh uh peacefulness if they think that it just gonna go like that and this a revolution somebody has to go for the cause and we are prepared. We are prepared for uh Liberia to be free for Liberia to be staple (sic) run by an elected president the president that the people elected so I am back home, people say a lot of things I know they have the media they have everything they saying that I ran away from Liberia. How can I run from my country? There was legitimate government I stayed here with all the harassment and I stayed here. I served my nation. I cannot run no matter what the circumstances may be I will always be around here. You know I will always be around. This is my country and nobody can take me from this country.

Q. Ambassador Weah, you met with President Mbeki and President Kuffour what they asking you to accept and what they asking you not to accept?

WEAH: Well uh uh they telling me we need to have a meeting because it’s very serious. There should be no victor we should look for a way forward for a peaceful Liberia so I think it was a good message and uh Honorable President Mbeki was not thinking about who they select or who they elect. What he was thinking about is that uh how Liberia can be peaceful because it is very important for Africa so I think it was uh a very good thing.

Q. So as candidate for CDC what are you going to accept?

WEAH: I was elected by the people and I was elected by the people. I showed the evidence and uh As far as I am concern I am the president of the Republic of Liberia. So whether they accept that or not I was elected and uh the world must know that I won a peaceful election. Two times I was elected and uh we have to face that.

Q. So you still serious?
WEAH: Definite! I showed evidence and everybody know and uh so there’s a need for us to discuss and I am very happy that I am back home you know to see my supporters. I remain resolute no matter what happen you know and I will always seek for a peaceful Liberia and for Liberia to move on and for Liberians to enjoy the country once again.”

What an idiot. Is this guy for real? Is this the kind of leadership we almost got? I just can't believe after all we've been through over the years, we're still letting our personal agenda and egos prevail over our national pride and future prosperity.

George Weah really needs to accept defeat and concede. As God would have it he did not win the election as he is truly the village idiot that would have brought shame to our beloved country. He is young. If you really love your country Mr. Weah, you would step back, go and get the education they accused you of not having and come back to run in the next election. Liberia and Liberians have suffered too much to make do with a president who cannot stand head to head with the rest of the progressive world.
So George Weah, shut the hell up and stop parambulating all over the damn continent crying to everyone. You lost the election because you are incompetent and immature and our country deserves better. Ellen Johnson has the support of the world and is bringing some positive shine to Liberia. If Weah had won this would not have happened. He would have plunged our country into darkness because his focus is on living la vida loca. All the millions of dollars he made he never rubbed two dimes together to sit in a class and enlighten himself. So we could care less how many trophies he won. Lets talk about how many roads he paved, or schools he built or orphanages he sponsored in his entire career. George Weah go to hell and burn. You will not destroy Liberia. You will not. God will not let you

When his own cousin Salensa Debar told us that Weah was incompetent and should not be considered for the Liberian Presidency, some people took this advice lightly. Now we are seeing the reality of this advice. Quite frankly,Ellen's election saved Liberia from the hands of a Dictator that would made Samuel Doe and Charles Taylor amateurs when comparing African Dictators.
Here is a man who refuses to listen to the world. He insists that his will must prevail and that come what may, he is "President" and will accept nothing less. The Guy is gone insane or should I say he is power drunk. Indeed had Liberians made the error to elect this idiot as President, our country would have been thrown back for the next 40 years.

Mr. Weahs interview is so incoherent and filled with ranting and raving that I am confuse as to the outcome of his meeting with the Honourables Mbeki and Kuffour. I did not get from his interview that they have acknowledged his claim of fraud in the Novemeber elections. Mr Weah we the Liberian people will not allow you to take our freedom hostage. You are currently acting like a spoil brat. My seven year old exercise better restraints than you when she loses a game. Come on if you claim to love liberia so much why don't you prove it by not inciting riots. I am certain you are aware that most of your supporters are vagrants and are looking for the first opportunity to take to the streets with violence and looting. Please do not let this be your mantra too many folks believe in you and your goodwill..........many have spoken so highly of your goodness you do not want to be listed in history as a WARLORD. Liberians will no longer tolerate this kind of behaviour. So take heed from your brother IVAH and be easy as we say down here in the south. Let it ride because we will not toloerate insidious acts.

well.... we created a monster from the start, now let's deal with it. This is just an extravagant foolishness. Who would have thought of this kind of embarrassment. Liberians, let's face it. " meeting the criteria and being capable are just not the same". Hint to the wise.

Oppong should know that Liberia is a country and not his personal farm. We are tired and will not stand for this nonsense anymore.

It's a pity that we have to go through this again. A coup plot? The lady hasn't even been inaugurated and there is romour of a coup plot.

Why is Weah doing this? I knew it. Electing Weah president of Liberia would have been the greatest mistake Liberians every made. Thank God for Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Weah and his advisors are about to be the first to be sent to Belle Yalla.

George Opong Weah needs public Flogging. We can always waive humanitarism for the sake of the survival of the nation. The next time that this animal call George Weah makes another statement about our political affairs, Liberians and the UN need to publicly flog him to set an example for future fail politicians.

Isaac, thanks for the articles, they truly come through.

I listened to the interview and I must say thanks for transcribing it. How did you do that? You did a good enough job.

I tried as best as could to undersatnd and grasp the thniking, logic, sense, meaning, purpose, goal, desire etc, etc..... from Mr. Weah's interview and nothing, I mean NOTHING make any sense. The following line blew me out. "There’s no victor in the elections, even though I was". George, try to make sense when you speak! people will read and listen to what you say!

I am not here to demean Mr. Weah, actually I love the brother as one of the most outstanding athlete of our times, however there are a few things he needs to understand and do.

1. He needs to understand that Liberia is not his farm.

2. He needs to understand that if he has nothing sensible to say he should keep quiet.

3. He needs to understand that popularity is not politics. They both starts with P but they are different words.

4. He needs to understand that Liberia is not a football field for him to play on.

5. ....and the most important thing Mr. Weah needs to do is improve himself and stop making joke out of Liberians. We have had enough of this. George, get some education, enjoy your retirement from professional soccer, enjoy your money and leave politics to the politicians. Stop speaking threats!

A wake up call for all peace-loving Liberians--could you imagine electing George Weah president of Liberia? Thanks, Weah. You really make me belive that God really exists!

The Lord never sleeps; He has seen all that we have been through and was not going to put us through another hardship and self-destruction.

That said, Weah: stop listening to those failed, incompetent and recycled politicians who can not make it anywhere else in the world...Baccus Matthew (does still want to be your Foreign Minister...because not any longer in Liberia), Nagbe (what does he want...Minister of Corruption and Failure?), Teahjay (tell him to return to the U.S. to find a parking lot job).... What a shame!

Do you realize that these guys are just bent on using you to get what they want, if if it's at the cost of your life? You should learn from the lesson of Samuel Doe. He would be alive today enjoying whatever he could taken from Liberia had he listened to those who advised him that he handed the affairs of the State to a democractically-elected civilian administration. Well, you know where he is today. And don't think too that taylor will get away with what he did either. Just so you know where you are being led to...

You worked hard on the football fields to honestly earn your money. And I am sure your children need you to be with them; please heed to my advice those of others and take your hand out politics. Accept the result and lets give peace a second chance to move our beloved country forward out of darkness.

I really hope you will listen and be wise. If not, I will see you at the gate of hell someday...my brother.

Isaac, as always you back up your claims with facts because you take the time to do the research unlike some of us lazier folks. Let me however play devil’s advocate for a moment.
The audio depicts a frustrated, heavily accented and not grammatically/syntaxically correct candidate who is at his wit’s end about what to do next.

Weah is asserting that he has rights to the presidency as he was cheated. I think the real issue is how legal is it for him to be doing this?
He has the constitutional right to express allegations of fraud especially since he was in possession of pre-marked ballots. Based on his reasoning if one is democratically elected then indeed one is the president elect so lets all just calm down and stop being outraged. Even if George took it a step further and revolted against the establishment because it violated the law and wants to strong arm him into submission he would still not be doing anything illegal technically if his reasoning were sound and his actions based on that reasoning.
I mean even what is recognized by some as international law does not make it illegal for citizens to start an insurrection when the government of a country does not uphold the laws and leaves no recourse for righting injustice. The government usually calls it treason and the violated call it a revolution.

So in this particular instance (you legal heads) is Weah not justified? If he accuses the agencies (NEC) of the NTGL of being corrupt (orchestrating the fraud) then how can he accept the findings of their investigation? How can he sit still and see what he has sacrificed his personal wealth and good name to get just slip out of his hands especially since he did have proof of pre-marked ballots.

Some are accusing him of treason already but has anything that he has done amount to treason?
Remember that the NTGL is not an elected body but rather a warlord brokered one so will allegations of treason be appropriate?
Fuirthermore, the president elect declared by the NEC has not been inaugurated. According to Webster

2 : the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance

I see that the general mood is that Weah is a selfish idiot. Even if the there were truth to his claims I think he would still be disqualified by most in this forum because of his qualifications rather than the reliability of the evidence presented. This is understandable as we are all of the same mindset having been exposed to the same experiences. However the Diaspora never did vote so our opinions are just that “opinions”. A few hundred thousand voted for George and they see the outcome differently.

I have to admit that I was surprised that Ellen won the elections. I didn’t see the masses voting for her. So I was delighted when I saw her in the lead. We still have to maintain a critical eye though as nothing is impossible in Liberia furthermore she has followers just as zealous as George’s whom she cannot control and who could have done unscrupulous things.
We all know that what George is doing is dangerous and could lead to war again but this will test our maturity as a state in dealing with this kind of dissent. What plan did the NTGL have for dealing with such a situation? Brushing it off and wishing that the accusers would let it be? Or using violence, intimidation and Police brutality to suppress the voice of dissent? I don’t think the latter would work because these rebels are spoiling for a fight and do not fear violence at all.

Now personally, i think that it is politically immature for anyone aspiring to leadership, to erode confidence and respect in governing institutions in such perilous times. This only encourages disorder. I think the words of the old man of Africa FHB should be seriously considered here " Que personne ne m'oblige a choisir entre l'injustice et le desordre car je n'hesiterai point a choisir l'injustice"
Translation: "Let no one force me to choose between injustice and chaos for i will not hesitate at all to choose injustice"

Ruled by logic, driven by ambition and compassion, powered by force of will, erudition is my resource, organization my tool, excellence my standard, greatness my destiny. FOW

I am not a lawyer; however, to argue that Oppong is exercising his constitutional rights to the deteriment and threathening the security and safety of a million more people, is to me pure BULLSHIT! C'mon, is that and how he wanted (in this case, still wants) to lead us?

Who is advising this once-beloved brother? Those of your are his true friends, family members and/or are closely associated with him should make it your personal responsibility and duty to take him away from the circles of Baccus Matthew, Milton Teahjay, Lenn Eugene Nangbe and other self-seeking nincompoops who are only concerned with destructing whatever little hope there may be left for Liberians.

This clearly shows that had George won the elections, he would not have been able to think for himself. Thank you Lord!
